One of my goals as academician is sending my research to conference/seminar. For me, joining seminar is a challenge to prove my commitment to write our ideas until I finish it. Seminar is the place to learn from other expert about current trends and findings in the field I study. And the other important thing is I build networks among students and academician of Linguistics. In the mid of 2014, actually I missed the date of Conaplin (Conference of Applied Linguistic) at UPI because I forgot the date and also didn’t have any idea to write. I also couldn’t continue my paper for seminar in Malang due to hectic schedule for SSEAYP 41st training and part time jobs. Thus, I promise to myself that I should put my full attention to the next seminar.
I joined the seminar with my class mate, Febri Hermawan. Because the topic is about the linguistic role for other studies, we took the topic of language and technology entitled “Anthropomorphism in Indonesian Online Newspaper about Information and Communication Technology”. Shortly, it discussed about metaphors with human characteristic that are attached to the description of IT product such as hand phone, internet provider, social media, etc. The research was aimed at identifying the words that classified as anthropomorphism based on Ulmann’s theory on anthropomorphism metaphor (1977) and revealing the functions of anthropomorphism in the texts. Anthropomorphic metaphor is the expressions of inanimate objects referring to human and its part, human senses, and human passion. The corpus data were collected from newspaper websites of as tekno.kompas.com in 2013-2014. The research finding showed that the anthropomorphism in ICT were reffered to human body, human attitude, human activity, human sense and human interpersonal relationship. The research also revealed the functions of anthropomorphic metaphor, which are for the communicative and persuasive purposes, for shapping the readers’ perspective for refilling the gap of vocabularies in ICT. These sentences are my abstract. J
I tried to propose my second abstract. Actually I was not so sure since the research need long time to finish. But then, thank God, the second abstract is also accepted. I need the help from my classmate also, Enggar Mulyajati. I wrote about linguistic anthropology. The title is “Javanese Lexicon of Roof Tile Industries in Pringsewu District: An Anthropology Linguistics Study.” This study was aimed at identifying the lexicons and describing the knowledge of traditional roof tile industry in Javanese culture through the lexicons. This qualitative study was conducted in Pringsewu District of Lampung Province by selecting seven informants from seven different Traditional Roof Tile Industries. Data were collected by conducting field observation, interview and field notes. Data collected were analyzed by using the anthropology linguistics approach from Duranti (1997), Salzmann (1998) and Ottenheimer (2013).The findings showed that the lexicon of Traditional Roof Tile Industry in Javanese Language could classified in terms of material, equipment, activity, and type of roof tile. Those lexicons reflected the knowledge system of Javanese culture based on adaptation to nature and development of technology. The findings also revealed that there were variations of lexicon that refer to some concepts that are varied in seven areas of roof tile industries.
The full paper will be compiled in Prosiding with ISBN, as the committee said. These papers are warming up for me to be really involved in linguistic world. My expectation is simple, I want to write paper that is tangibly contributive to society, and that is more than additional library collection. J
