This morning I invited my debate students of SMA Taruna Bakti to come to UPI. The school was not accessible this Saturday because the National Examination committee would like to “clean” the are of the test. Last year, the committee asked us to get out from the class suddenly without any confirmation from the extracurricular coordinators. Shortly, I don’t wanna make the same mistake (not my mistake actually). So, rather than having the debate practice at comfortable hang out place such as Humming bird, Giglebox, or other expensive progo area, it is better to have a friendly match with English Debating Community of UPI.
So, it was really cold to gather around Partere Park. It was also wet, so many big ants, and some unlucky worms on the ground. But, I justify that this is the art of debating (how come?????) you should always wake up and be ready for external pressure (even Vioni were looking for restroom, debating with security in FPBS *HOW BRAVE YOU ARE, for urgent pup time). Mahat also tried to move his “thin and tall” body to one-hour-survive. Meanwhile Farhana and Marcia pretended that it was a picnic under a big tree so they sat down innocently.
We debated on the motion of THW legalize free immigration. I knew some of them were rather confuse about the definition of free immigration. Even, one team thought about penguin immigration. So, the opening government and the closing opposition were UPI students, meanwhile opening opposition and the closing government were Tarbak students. This blog is not for adjudicating how the debate was (for the sake of lexical cohesion and very far discussion). The debate were great and had dynamic. Some suggestions were conveyed, too.
So, what I want to emphasize here is the importance of having friendly match. I say it is oke to learn from varsity students or vice versa. Don’t be shy just because your opponent is far older or younger than you. You guys are both learning. Then, BE A FRIEND one another. Having this match means that we try to know how far our capability compared to other debate pool.
Important note in every debate practice: 1. Your note will be useful for next debate because one argument can be applied to other debate. 2. Learn from your opponent how they construct their argument. 3. Don’t be afraid of being the losing team 4. Don’t be afraid of delivering POI. 5. Don’t hesitate to ask your adjudicator.
I managed to gather them in Al-Furqon ground floor, but I met a stranger suddenly smile at me. I was afraid that he is a people who would do soft crime like hypnotizing. *my friend experience, so we moved.
So, this is the third time of EDC UPI vs Tarbak. See you in the next matches 🙂
